City of Beaufort

The Beaufort Community

Renowned for its scenic location in the heart of South Carolina’s Lowcountry, Beaufort is the state’s second-oldest city. Visitors can step into history in our downtown district, where efforts to preserve antebellum architecture have earned the area a designation as a National Historic Landmark. Close to 70 other sites are included on the National Register of Historic Places.
You’ll also find a city with a wealth of recreation opportunities. There are nearby beaches, golf, kayaking and fishing. In fact, Field and Stream Magazine has rated Beaufort among the top 20 fishing towns in the country.

Maybe you’ve already seen Beaufort and didn’t even know it. Our moderate climate makes us a popular location for major motion pictures, including “The Big Chill,” “Forrest Gump” and “GI Jane.”

Beaufort’s not just a great place to visit, though. A rich local culture and a thriving arts community – Beaufort’s been named as one of America’s best arts town – make it a great place to live, too.

Tourism and hospitality is our top industry, though agriculture/aquaculture remain strong as well. Our local economy also benefits from nearby military installations, including Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Parris Island and a U.S. Naval Hospital.
